Your worst enemy

personal growth Nov 08, 2018

Were you aware that you could be your own worst enemy? Today we are going to help you eliminate the negative self talk that is destroying everything that matters to you.  For the distraction of the day: What’s the weirdest thing you could imagine happening at a Waffle House? I think we may have found it but you’ll have to listen to the very end to discover what it was.

What you tell yourself matters. Me and Amy struggle with this one. If your mind is full of negatives your actions will be filled with negatives. Take those negative messages and turn them into positives.
I’ll never succeed = can’t wait to see how God comes through

I hate myself = I am worthy and deserve to be honored

Your negative self talk probably comes from how your parents spoke to you

Quieting negative self-talk won’t happen overnight.  There's not a magic word or pill.  You need a lot o positive messages repeatedly said to yourself over time.

Silencing the negative voice is believing and telling yourself things like: “I love you.” “I’ll take care of you.” “I am proud of you.”  Tell yourself what you wish your parents or loved one would have told you.

To start, write a list of messages you wish you had heard or learned when you were a child. If you need help, you can try this list from Jack Lee Rosenberg (we have added the "In Jesus name"):

  1. I love you. In Jesus name
  2. I want you. In Jesus name
  3. You are special to me. In Jesus name
  4. I see you, and I hear you. In Jesus name
  5. I’ll take care of you. In Jesus name
  6. My love will make you well. In Jesus name
  7. It is not what you do but who you are that I love. In Jesus name
  8. I love you, and I will give you permission to be different from me. In Jesus name
  9. I’ll be there for you; I will be there even when you die. In Jesus name
  10. You can trust me. In Jesus name
  11. You can trust your inner voice. In Jesus name
  12. Sometimes I will tell you “no,” and that’s because I love you. In Jesus name
  13. I accept and cherish your love. In Jesus name
  14. You don’t have to be afraid anymore. In Jesus name
  15. You don’t have to be alone anymore. In Jesus name
  16. I will set limits, and I am willing to enforce them. In Jesus name
  17. If you fall down, I will pick you up. In Jesus name
  18. I am proud of you. In Jesus name
  19. I have confidence in you. I am sure you will succeed. In Jesus name
  20. You are beautiful/handsome. In Jesus name

Lastly, with negative thoughts we want to:

  • Catch it
  • Control it
  • Challenge it
  • Change it
  • Cherish it

2 Corinthians 10:5
We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ...

12 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.  2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
